I have a distinct image in my head of what that looks like, and it is definitely unsettling. Every time I come by this quote, it sends shivers down my back. Quite frankly, I feel that it is the harsh reality of what the future is going to be, and perhaps what it is always going to be. I guess Orwell was trying to prepare the past of what the future is going to bring. You will always have those people who are against the current and fighting against it, trying with all their might to oppose of what everyone is following. But in the end, similar to the novel, these people are always dealt with, by the "boot" and the current will resume to flow just as it has.
Although this quote was not for me as traumatizing as the physical and mental torture that Winston has been through, it did stand out to me as it sums up very well a major "theme" of the novel.
As I picture this violent scene in my head, the boots for me symbolize the Party (Winston speaks various times of hearing the sound of boots in the halls). They also remind me of a sort of military force imposed of this face representing the people. When talking about military I can help but link it to a dictatorship. Which brings as back to the whole issue of oppression of the party on their citizens.Totalitarianism force versus the individuals freedom. However, when I think of it well I have a little issue with how the physical action of stepping on a face might represent the oppression of the Party of the people, them doing something against the will of the population. However, there lies their strength being able to control the spirit of the people , make them love them and obey to them from their own will. That is their key force, dangerous. But is it really dangerous if both sides are winning, the party conceiving it s power it wants so badly and the people obeying bling happily living their dull life, satisfied being part of a system well working for the evolution of humanity. So if they don't mind why bother take our feet off their face.
